Bald Eagles : Although Minnesota is ranked second to Alaska for nesting population of Bald Eagles (Haliateeus leucocephalus) with 1700 nesting pairs according to 2007 data. My best photography of Bald Eagles were taken at Kachemak Bay in Homer AK, however I still photograph eagles in Minnesota and some of these images were taken at various spots in Minnesota.

Ducks : Most of my duck images are taken during the winter when the ducks congregate on areas of open water along the Mississippi or Minnesota Rivers. However during the spring migration I will commonly use my floating blind to capture images of hard to get waterfowl.

Common Loon : The Common Loon (Gavia immer) is Minnesota's State Bird, much of my photography for this beautiful and graceful bird is taken from my canoe, however I did have an opportunity to set up my blind on land because a pair of Loons set up nesting duty on a small island not more than 50 feet from shore. Over the next three years I was able to capture some very difficult behavior of this bird.

Game Birds : I use the term "game birds" only because all of these species in this gallery can be hunted by licensed hunters. Most of the images are taken with the use of photography blinds either provided by Wildlife Associations or my personal blind. The majority (not all) of the Wild turkey images are taken with the use of a blind, decoys and calling techniques with mouth or box calls.

Backyard Birds : This gallery will be of birds that are associated with your very own backyard. If your backyard has the habitat these birds prefer, you could definitly be sitting on your deck and observe or photograph everyone of the species that you see in this gallery.

Owls-Hawks : Most of these images are taken during the winter time, when many of the Northern Owls will migrate south to find a food source. However the Great Horned Owl images were taken in the spring.

Swans-Geese : All of these Trumpeter Swans winter along the Mississippi River near Monticello, MN. For this photographer the best weather is cold (from 0 F to -15 F) clear skies and no or very little wind. The cold air and warmer water create mist and offer the photographer some very surreal photo opportunities.

Other Birds : Images in this gallery will be of birds that I have very little images of or birds that are taken outside of Minnesota or Western Wisconsin. All of the Atlantic Puffin images were taken on Lunga Island, Scotland.

Other Birds

Sandhill Cranes : Most of these Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis) images were photographed at Crex Meadows WMA near Grantsburg, WI. The peak of the migration occurs around late October until early November, commonly 5,000 to 10,000 Sandhill Cranes will use Crex as a stop over before continuing their journey further south.
