John Pennoyer > 10-20-09 ASC-9028: Sandhill Crane Silhouette-Crex Meadows WMA near Grantsburg WI is the place to be from the middle of October to November freeze-up. Sandhill Cranes will use this area for a stop-over on their migration to places further south. During the peak there could be 8000 to 10000 cranes feeding and resting before continuing their journey. On this visit, it was a cloudy overcast late afternoon when this group of cranes flew directly overhead, as I tracked them through my viewfinder and the instant I saw all of the wings being parallel I took this image.
John Pennoyer > 10-20-09 ASC-9047: Sandhill Crane gathering- This is one of my favorite images that I have taken of the Sandhill Cranes at Crex Meadows WMA. It was early morning and the Cranes were just beginning to leave the refuge and head out to the fields. A large group of cranes just took off from my left and as they flew by, I zoomed my lens out to show cranes in the air and also on the ground. For me this really shows Crex Meadows WMA in October.
John Pennoyer > 10-20-09 ASC-9131: Sandhill Crane in flight- The early morning light really shows the beautiful color of this adult lone crane as it flew right by this photographer.
John Pennoyer > 10-20-09 ASC-9145: Sandhill Crane taking flight-This adult Sandhill Crane was feeding in the refuge when it decided to take flight and head to the fields outside of the refuge. This image really shows the beautiful underside of the wings.
John Pennoyer > 8-17-09-ATV-9012: Turkey Vulture-While driving on the backroads in Northern Mn I spotted this Turkey Vulture perched on a old birch stump. I turned my vehicle around and set my bean bag on window and was able to fire several images with my 500mm lens. My first of this species.
John Pennoyer > 8-17-08 MBB-9250: Black Bear in stream-This is one of the few times that I have been able to capture a black bear walking in this little stream in Northern MN.
John Pennoyer > 8-17-09 MBB-9270: Black bear portrait-I can never resist taking a portrait of a Black Bear. This large male was walking with his head down, when another bear crossed his path, he lifted his just long enough for me to capture this image.
John Pennoyer > 8-17-09 MBB-9280: Black bear silhouette-This black bear was in this tree resting on the large branch. It was a heavy overcast day and when he stood on the branch several of us from my workshop, took this very rare image of a black bear silhouette.
John Pennoyer > 10-03-09 MMO-9080:October Bull Moose-This young bull moose was hanging around a road in Northern MN feeding and resting for the last couple of days. It was during the rutting season and I can only imagine that he got tired of being chased and harrassed by bigger bulls and found this little seclusion all to himself. aFter a couple of days he was gone and not to be found again.
John Pennoyer > 10-03-09 MNLR-9097: A night at the Cabin-It was about one hour past sunset and the stars were just beginning to come out. When I looked out the window of the cabin my wife and I were staying in, the folks staying at the cabin next to us just turned on the lights, I went outside to capture this image.
John Pennoyer > 10-03-09 MNLR-9132:Lake Superior fury-For over 40 years my wife and I have been going to the North Shore of Lake Superior, on this particular day winds were 50-60 MPH, with 12' to 15' waves crashing into the shore, I have never witnessed such fury from Lake Superior.
John Pennoyer > 10-03-09 MNLR-9194: Baptism River in fall color-It was a dry fall so the Baptism River and other rivers along the North Shore had minimum flow, with the fall foilage, it is still one of my favorite images taken this year.
John Pennoyer > MNPR-9049: (9-05-09) Twilight at Roscoe Prairie-This image was taken about 15 minutes before sunrise, which I think sometimes can be your very best light. But in this case as the sun began to rise the temperature dropped and I got some great images of the thickening mist. Which now is only a thin layer.
John Pennoyer > MNPR-9068: (9-05-09) Prairie sunrise-It was a very cool September morning and has the sun began to rise the temperature began to drop forming mist rising from the prairie. I found this Macmillan Sunflower and composed this image with the rising sun and mist.
John Pennoyer > 9-05-09 MNPR-9073: Misty morning at Roscoe Prairie-One of my very favorite images of a prairie on a very cool, misty September morning.
