Impressions of Nature

Photography by John Pennoyer

  1. Animals

Canine

Its like alot of things in life, sometimes a person just gets lucky. I found this fox den while out scouting for wildflowers to photograph, I spent several days with this family of kits. While sitting in our blind photographing Prairie Chickens a Coyote happens to come into the lek and gives us photographers opportunities to capture several images of him before he exits the lek. But I still say, the more hours in the field the "luckier" a photographer becomes!

  • S0015 Red Fox peeking from den: (Vulpes vulpes) While sitting in my blind I was patiently waiting for someone from this family to appear from their mid-day nap. This little guy/gal was the first to check out this photographer sitting patiently in his make shift blind.
  • S0016 Red Fox Trio: These three fox kits (Vulpes vulpes) were frolicking around the den when a deer came into the scene, very quickly these three kits ran to the entrance of the den and was keeping a close eye on this intruder. My guess is that this is the first time they had observed a deer.
  • S0025 Red Fox kit: (Vulpes vulpes) This little kit probably just made his first appearance to the world outside. His big wide eyes was carefully looking over this strange guy with a big black object it front of his head.
  • 8007 Red Fox snoozing: (Vulpes vulpes) My wife and I were just getting ready to go out for the evening when I happeded to look outside and here in our little woodlot was this fox taking a snooze. I quickly grabbed my camera opened the door and snapped a couple of photos. He opened his eyes, but as soon as I went back in the house he buried his nose under his tail and snoozed away.
  • MCY-4001: Coyote at Teddy Roosevelt NP: (Canis latrans) Photographed from the car with a bean bag in early morning light.
  • MCY-9015 Coyote: (Canis latrans) While photographing Prairie Chickens in NW Minnesota, this coyote came on the far end of the Lek and proceeded to walk on the far end, but it was towards our blind and we all were able to capture several images.

  • MCY-9022: Coyote stare-This coyote (Canis latrans) was walking with a purpose and looking straight in front of where he was going. I pursed my lips and gave a little "squeal" and without loosing a beat he looked in our direction, the motor drives were really humming and we all got some great images of a hard to get species in the wild.
